Ghost Ship

Directed by Steve Beck

2002

CAMERA: The movie starts with bird eye shots showing the magnitude of the ship, showing that it seems to be very normal and made for rich people. We get closer to see the people inside the ship, all of them wearing classy clothes, most of them wearing black clothes except for the main characters, the little girl, the singer, the captain and the military, making us to see them more than the rest of the people. Most of the shots are in a eye level, until we get to the last part of the scene where we see the madness in long shots.

EDITING: The characters that receive most of the screen-time are the little girl, the singer, the captain and the military, this is because they are the main focus of the scene, to show the victims and the executors of the plan. The scene is full of dissolves transitions until the last part of the scene, where they turn in straight cuts, moving faster. We can see and also understand by the narrative of the characters who may be the main villain of the story and who may be the protagonist, the scene is clear and you can understand what happened in the scene without looking it more than one time. As I said before, the pace of the scene is slow, showing calmly that will contrast with the madness of the next scenes, the pace slowly evolves with the creation of tension. The scene has lots of SFX to show explicitly the massacre that happened on the ship, with bodies being cut in half.

MISE-EN SCENE: The costume in the scene are elegant and most of them are black except for the main characters, the little girl, the singer, the captain and the military, making us to see them more than the rest of the people. The lightning is high key lightning for most of the scene, focusing on the singer as a distraction. To the end of the scene, the scene gets darker only with natural lightning from the moon. The actors represent their intentions with their bodies, you can tell which characters seem to be the bad guys and the good ones. All of them are well presented and with no defects in their skin except from the captain who is older and has more wrinkles. All the props used are the toy that the little girl is holding at the beginning of the scene and the instruments of the musicians that were with the singer, but the most important ended up being the wire that cuts all the people in half. The Scenery in the whole scene is the cruise ship, focusing on the dance floor, where the action takes place. You can see it is a very lighted and elegant place.

SOUND: The scene starts with the music singed by the singer, the songs are diegetic and parallel to the scene, but contrapuntual considering the end of it. The music is interrupted by the level being activated, starting tension music that goes with the song until the tension finally explodes, all the music stops singing and sound effects of the wire appears on the scene, letting a few seconds of sound effects until the bodies fell in the ground. They make more sound effects until all of them are in the ground, when the little girl screams. The scream is used to finish the scene with the tension music from before.
